FULL FORM OF EWS = ECONOMICALLY WEAKER SECTIONS
The full form of EWS is “Economically Weaker Sections”. It is a term used to refer to citizens or families who have incomes below a certain Dalit status. Although there may be other economic factors in deciding the economic weakness of citizens / families, income is a major criterion.
In the public policy domain, the term would be appreciated in the context of the Preamble to the Constitution of India, which judges socially, economically and politically.
This classification as EWS is different from other categories like “disadvantaged sections” which belong to SC / ST / other socially backward classes. However, the definition of EWS can also be classified as “Below Poverty Line (BPL)”.
There is no concrete definition for Economically Weaker Sections in India. In addition, the state and central governments may set different criteria to decide the status of EWS.
The Government periodically reviews and then fixes the level of the income ceiling to keep it relevant and contemporary for the economically weaker sections.
Generally the status of EWS is confirmed on the basis of income certificate issued by the Revenue Officer below the rank of Tehsildar, BPL Ration Card.
In some places a legal affidavit for the issue of EWS certificate is taken. The EWS criterion has been formulated separately while giving benefits under education or housing.
What is the eligibility criteria to apply for an EWS Certificate
Who can create an EWS certificate? The government has laid certain eligibility conditions (EWS Reservation Eligibility) for candidates able to claim Reservation under this new EWS category.
You must fulfill all the conditions mentioned below:
1. You must be a ‘general’ category candidate (not under reservation for SC, ST or OBC).
2 . Your family’s total annual income should be less than Rs 8 lac.
3. It includes all methods of earning such as agriculture, salary, business for you before applying.
Who can not apply for an EWS Certificate?

HOW TO APPLY ONLINE FOR EWS CERTIFICATE
Those who are under EWS Section or Economically Weaker Section and whose annual income is less than Rs 1 lakh, are eligible to apply for EWS admission. As per the government mandate, all schools have to reserve 25% of their seats for the EWS category.

HOW TO GET AN EWS CERTIFICATE OFFLINE
You can get EWS certificate from your local government authority, also known as 10 Percent Reservation Certificate. The certificate is actually called ‘Income And Assets Certificate’ and is the proof that is required for Ews Reservation.
There is no online process by the government for obtaining EWS certificate. You need to visit your local tehsil or any other local government office.
You will need other documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card, bank statement, passport size photo. Also, you have to keep Income and Assets Certificate with you.

AGE LIMIT FOR EWS ADMISSION
For Nursery: On 31 March 2020, the child’s age should be between three years to five years.
For KG: On 31 March 2020, the child’s age should be between four years to six years.
For Class 1: On 31 March 2020, the child’s age should be between five years and seven years.
EWS Reservation Eligibility - Do all states in India have the same criteria?
The above criteria are given by the Central Government.
States in India can decide what will be the income criteria for EWS in their state. States can also increase or decrease the income limit set by the Center for their state.
Difference between EWS reservation and OBC reservation
27% reservation is provided for non-creamy layer candidates among Other Backward Communities (OBC). However, only 10% reservation is allowed for the economically weaker sections among general category candidates.
Apart from its quota, relaxation in age limit, number of opportunities and cut-off marks are available for OBC, SC and ST. The age limit or efforts so far for economically weaker candidates among general category candidates. There may be a separate cut-off for EWS quota. As in OBC, SC and ST.
