Size Of A SIM Card

As told earlier, the SIM was invented in the year of 1991 by Munich smart card maker Giesecke and Devrient. The size of a SIM card at that time (1991) was as much as a credit/debit card. But, with the passage of time, the size of a SIM card reduced to much extent. The nano SIM card which is being used in most of the smartphones nowadays is 8.8mm x 12.3mm in size.

Types of SIM

There are two types of a SIM card:

  • GSM 
  • CDMA

GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communication whereas CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access.

Thre is some major diffreneces in GSM and CDMA but as a user, you need to know only one difference –

A GSM SIM card can be used in any smartphone. It means that you can remove a GSM SIM from one phone and insert to another. It will still work the same.CDMA can be used in a particular  headset or phone only. You can’t use a CDMA SIM in any other phone than assigned.

Yes, absolutely. Every SIM card in this world is unique. Every SIM card has a unique information associated with it.

  • The world’s first GSM call was made in 1991 itself on the Radiolinja company’s network.
  • On 1 July 1991, the Prime Minister of Finland Hari Holkeri made the world’s first GSM call in Hell Sinky, Finland.
  • The first SIM card was used in a Nokia mobile on 9 November 1992.
  • Nokia was also the world’s first commercial GSM digital mobile phone.
  • In 1993, a SIM sent a message from one person to another.
  • In 2012, the Nano SIM card was first introduced to the world.
  • The first ESIM was launched in 2013.
