Routing Information Protocol

Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a protocol that routers use to exchange Network Topology Information. It is an Interior Gateway Protocol and is commonly used in the Network for Small Organization. A router running a RIP sends the content of its Routing Table to routers around it every 30 seconds.

RIP Protocol is Open Slandered Protocol. It is a very old Routing Protocol. It was developed in 1969. It is a Distance Vector protocol. It uses Hop Counts to calculate RIP Metric and it has a Maximum 15 Hope Allowed but RIP Protocol in Networks in days is very Less used, if we compare it with OSPF and EIGRP, then its time to converge and Scalability is very poor. RIP Protocol uses Transport Layer UDP Protocol Port no 520 to do data carry.

Features of RIP :

Updates of the network are exchanged periodically.
Updates (routing information) are always broadcast.
Full routing tables are sent in updates.
Routers always trust on routing information received from neighbor routers. This is also known as Routing on rumors.
