How Does LCD Work?

The backlight in the liquid crystal display also provides a light source behind the screen. This light is polarized, which means that half of the light shines through the liquid crystal layer.

Liquid crystals are made up of solid, partial liquids, which can be “twisted” by applying electrical voltages to them. They prevent polarized light when turned off, but reflect red, green, or blue light when activated.

Each LCD screen has a matrix of pixels that displays the image on the screen. The early LCDs had passive-matrix screens that controlled individual pixels by sending a charge to their row and column.

Since a limited number of electric charges could be sent every second, the screen was known to appear blurred when the screen moved quickly. Modern LCDs typically use the active-matrix technique. Which consists of thin film transistors, or TFTs.

These transistors include capacitors that enable individual pixels to actively retain the “charge”. Therefore, active-matrix LCDs are more efficient and appear more responsive than Passive-matrix displays.

Note – The backlight of the LCD can be either a traditional bulb or an LED light. An “LED display” is simply an LCD screen with an LED backlight. This is different from an OLED display, which lights up different LEDs for each pixel.

While liquid crystals block the backlight of most LCDs when they are off, some light can still shine (which may be noticeable in a dark room) so OLEDs typically have darker black levels than LCDs it happens.
