Two widely recognized full form of DG: “Director General” & “Diesel Generator“.

1. DG: Diesel Generator

A diesel generator (also called a diesel genset) is a combination of a diesel engine with an electric generator (often an alternator) to generate electrical energy. This is a typical case of an engine-generator. A diesel compression-ignition engine is typically designed to run on diesel fuel, but some variants are optimized for other liquid fuels or natural gas.

Diesel generating sets are used as an emergency power supply without connection to the power grid, or when the grid fails, as well as for exporting more complex applications such as peak-lopping, grid support, and power grids .

Proper size of diesel generator is important to avoid low load or power loss. Sizing is complicated by the characteristics of modern electronics, especially non-linear loads.

About 50 MW and above in size, an open cycle gas turbine is more efficient at full load than an array of diesel engines, and is far more compact with comparable capital costs.

But for regular part-loading, even at these power levels, diesel arrays are sometimes preferred to open cycle gas turbines, due to their superior capacity.
